Richard D. Segal is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Seavest Investment Group where he is the Chairman of Seavest Healthcare Properties, and is a Managing Partner of Rethink Education.
Mr. Segal has a long history of investing in real estate and venture capital investments. Prior to founding Seavest in 1982, Mr. Segal was a partner at Cramer Rosenthal McGlynn where he managed the firm’s private investments. He has served on the boards of many public and private companies including Hudson General Inc. (acquired by Lufthansa, SchoolNet (acquired by Pearson), Wireless Generation (acquired by Newscorp), and Hyponex Inc. (sold to Scotts Miracle-Gro Co.).
Today, Mr. Segal serves on the Board of Trustees of New York Presbyterian Hospital where he is a member of the Real Estate and Major Facilities Committees, and also serves on the Steering Committee of the hospital’s Millstein Heart Center. Mr. Segal also serves on the boards of various education technology companies including Flocabulary, Knowledge to Practice, Noodle Markets, Voxy, Civitas and Speakaboos.
Mr. Segal is deeply committed to creating better communities through his philanthropic engagements, which are primarily focused on health, education, providing opportunities for low income children and the arts.
Mr. Segal is a Trustee of the Whitney Museum of Art in New York City, where he chairs the Finance Committee and serves on the Executive Committee and the New York Academy of Art, serving as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Wesleyan University.
Douglas Ray is President of Seavest Healthcare Properties. Mr. Ray joined Seavest Investment Group in 1995 and has subsequently been involved in all phases of the firm’s development. Mr. Ray is responsible for supervising all real estate and private investments, including negotiating major transactions, overseeing the investment due diligence process, providing analysis and structuring equity and debt investments on behalf of Seavest and their clients.
Mr. Ray serves on the Board of Directors of Fifth Street Finance Corp. (NASDAQ: FSC), a public investment management company based in White Plains, NY and is a member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO). Prior to joining Seavest, Mr. Ray was employed in Washington, D.C. on the staff of U.S. Senator Arlen Specter and as a research analyst for the Republican National Committee. Mr. Ray received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh.
Jonathan Winer is the Senior Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer of Seavest Healthcare Properties. He joined the Seavest Investment Group in 2008 and has over 28 years of real estate experience. At Seavest, Mr. Winer has multi-faceted responsibilities including directing both the acquisition and asset management groups.
Prior to Seavest, Mr. Winer was a Partner at EY LLP where he directed the Healthcare Real Estate Advisory practice. Previously, Mr. Winer was active with Chemical Bank and Bear Stearns & Co., Inc. where he specialized in providing tax-exempt financing.
Mr. Winer is a frequent speaker at healthcare real estate industry events including seminars sponsored by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), Urban Land Institute (ULI) and Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). He serves on the BOMA Healthcare Facilities Conference Executive Committee and the Editorial Advisory Board of the publication Healthcare Real Estate Insights. He is also a Vice Chair of the ULI Healthcare and Life Sciences Council. Mr. Winer has an M.B.A. from New York University and a B.B.A. from George Washington University, and is a licensed Real Estate Broker in New York.
Michael Walden is Chief Operating Officer of Seavest Investment Group. He joined Seavest in 2011 and has operating responsibilities across the firm. Mr. Walden has over 15 years of experience establishing, operating and growing businesses in a variety of industries. This includes operating positions in venture-funded growth companies in the technology and telecommunications sectors. Mr. Walden is also a Partner in Rethink Education, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of portfolio companies Everfi and Neverware. He is Chairman of Practice Makes Perfect, a NYC based summer school and mentoring non-profit.
Prior to joining Seavest, Mr. Walden was a Managing Director at Potomac Media Partners, a corporate development advisory services firm. Prior to Potomac, he served as Executive Vice President of Corporate Development at InPhonic, Inc. where he was responsible for strategic partnerships, financings, business development and M&A activities.
Mr. Walden began his career in Washington, D.C. serving on the legislative staff of U.S. Senator Arlen Specter. Mr. Walden received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Richmond.
Shakawat Chowdhury is the Chief Financial Officer of Seavest Investment Group. Mr. Chowdhury joined Seavest in 2013, and manages the firm’s financial and accounting operations. Mr. Chowdhury has over 13 years of experience in the real estate industry with a focus on accounting and taxation.
Prior to joining Seavest, Mr. Chowdhury was a Senior Tax Director in the tax group for Tishman Speyer where he had responsibility for the U.S. tax reporting function of over 1,500 legal entities globally. Prior to his tenure at Tishman, Mr. Chowdhury spent four years as a Senior Tax Associate at Arthur Andersen & Co.
Mr. Chowdhury received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree Cum Laude in accounting with a minor in mathematics from Bernard M. Baruch College. Mr. Chowdhury is a CPA licensed in the State of New York.
Jenny Abramson is the Founder & Managing Partner of Rethink Impact, a venture capital firm focused on social impact investing. Jenny is an executive and entrepreneur having held a range of leadership roles across the social impact tech space–in education, personal data, and media. She has been covered in CNN, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, interviewed on Squawk Box, and featured at the Code Conference, and was named Top 40 Under 40 and a DC Power Women in Tech.
Most recently, Jenny served as CEO of LiveSafe, a mobile security company focused on preventing school shootings and sexual assaults. She also held significant business roles at The Washington Post, Personal (a data company), and BCG. In the education sector, Jenny oversaw the Transformation Management Office for DC Public Schools Chancellor Rhee and served as the Director of Strategy & Development at Teach for America. Jenny sits on five boards including the Advisory Board of Camden Partners (Exelixis Fund).
Jenny received a B.A. and M.A. from Stanford, an MBA with the Dean’s Award from Harvard Business School, where she served on Harvard’s Investment Advisory Committee for Shareholder Responsibility, and was a Fulbright Scholar at The London School of Economics.
Brandon Avrutin is a Vice President at Rethink Education, a venture capital firm focused on educational technology.
Brandon joined Seavest Investment Group in 2011 as an Investment Associate working on private equity and venture capital deals focused on technology investments in the education sector.
Prior to Seavest, Brandon spent three years as an Investment Banking Analyst with Lazard’s M&A and Restructuring groups. At Lazard, Brandon focused on financial institutions and worked on numerous transactions resulting from the credit crisis including the sale of Bear Stearns to JPMorgan, the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, and the U.S. Treasury’s investment in GMAC Financial Services, as well as the reverse merger of KKR Private Equity Investors with KKR & Co. Brandon received his B.A. in Philosophy and Economics from Middlebury College.
Malika Basheer is a Vice President in asset management for Seavest Healthcare Properties. Ms. Basheer joined Seavest in 2002 and is responsible for the management and analysis of an extensive portfolio of medical office and related healthcare properties. Her responsibilities extend to the evaluation of real estate investment opportunities and financing alternatives as well as the diligence for new transactions.
Prior to joining Seavest, Ms. Basheer worked at PepsiCo, Inc. as a Senior Financial Analyst in corporate finance. Ms. Basheer received a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Management Information Systems, as well as an M.B.A. from Binghamton University.
Michelle Dervan is a Principal at Rethink Education, a venture capital firm focused on education technology.
Prior to joining Rethink Education, Michelle was a Director of Strategic Partnerships at Pearson Education where she focused on sourcing and structuring partnership deals with large and small tech companies. She previously held a number of education, edtech and economic development roles at Irish government agency, Enterprise Ireland. She is actively interested in education policy and workforce development initiatives. She volunteers as an Organizer of the NYEdtech Meetup, as a Mentor with YearUp and serves as a NextGen Board Member of NY Collaborates for Autism, a nonprofit that designs innovative programs to improve the lives of people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Michelle has an MBA from Columbia Business School and a Bachelor’s degree in European Studies, French and Russian from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
Kaylee Grant is the Controller at Seavest Investment Group. Mrs. Grant is responsible for the accounting operations and financial reporting for all Seavest Investment Group entities. She has 8 years of experience focusing on fund accounting, financial reporting and transaction accounting.
Mrs. Grant joined Seavest in 2014 from Tishman Speyer where she was a fund controller responsible for financial accounting and fair value reporting for various funds investing in commercial real estate. Prior to her time at Tishman Speyer, Mrs. Grant spent four years as a senior auditor in the real estate service group at CohnReznick LLC.
Mrs. Grant received a dual Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting and Finance from Western New England University. Mrs. Grant is a CPA licensed in the State of New York.
Matt Greenfield is Managing Partner of Rethink Education, a venture capital firm focused on educational technology. He is on the boards of Ace Learning, BrightBytes, and Hapara and serves as an advisor to University Ventures and Laureate Education. His non-profit affiliations include the leadership council of NewSchools Venture Fund and the board of Mouse.org
Matt received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in English from Yale University, where he won five academic prizes and fellowships from the Mellon and Whiting Foundations and served on the editorial board of the Yale Journal of Law and the Humanities. He taught at Bowdoin College, where he served on the committee overseeing admissions, and the City University of New York, where he served on a college curriculum committee, helped launch an interdisciplinary learning community program for first-year students, taught in the teacher preparation program, and taught graduate classes in literature to teachers from the New York City public schools.
William Hanford is the Tax Director of Seavest Investment Group. Mr. Hanford joined Seavest in 2012 and oversees the firm’s tax compliance, reporting and planning operations. Mr. Hanford has over 15 years of experience in the real estate and private equity business with a focus on taxation and accounting.
Prior to joining Seavest, Mr. Hanford was an Associate Tax Director at Tishman Speyer Properties where he was responsible for managing the tax compliance and reporting for the company’s domestic and international real estate investment funds. Prior to his tenure at Tishman Speyer, Mr. Hanford was a Tax Associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. Previously, Mr. Hanford was also with DCC Securities in New York where he specialized in providing liquidity for publicly registered partnership investments.
Mr. Hanford received an M.B.A in Professional Accounting and Finance from Fordham University and a B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany.
Lloyd Mallah is a Vice President in asset management for Seavest Healthcare Properties. Mr. Mallah joined Seavest in 2004 and is responsible for the management and analysis of an extensive portfolio of properties comprised of commercial office, medical office, retail and residential assets. This includes the evaluation of real estate investment opportunities and financing alternatives, as well as management of the diligence process for new transactions.
Prior to joining Seavest, Mr. Mallah worked in global mergers and acquisitions as an investment banker for Lehman Brothers. Prior to Lehman, Mr. Mallah was a public auditor for Ernst & Young LLP. He received a Business Administration Bachelor’s degree from the John M. Olin School of Business at Washington University, and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. Mr. Mallah is a CPA licensed in the State of New York.
Erin A Molloy joined Seavest Investment Group in June 2016 in the newly created role of Director of Investor Relations. Erin leads the Investor Relations function for the Firm’s real estate and venture capital divisions.
Prior to joining Seavest Investment Group, Erin worked in marketing and investor relations at an established alternative investment manager where she worked closely with the Chief Marketing Officer to assist with fundraising efforts. Earlier in her career, Erin held similar positions in the alternative investment space working with a range of sophisticated institutional clients.
Erin is also a board member for Grace Outreach, a nonprofit based in South Bronx that serves low-income women seeking to enhance their academic skills and is co-Chair of the Next Gen New York group of 100 Women in Hedge Funds. Erin holds a B.S. from Ithaca College.
Heidi is a Partner at Rethink Impact. Previously, she was the former President and Head of Communities Investing for New Island Capital Management, an institutional-scale and 100% mission-focused investment advisor to a single ultra high net worth family. In this capacity, she helped grow and run the firm while also focusing on early stage private equity investing in online marketplaces, sustainable food and consumer brands, alternative financial institutions, and local living economies. She sat on New Island’s Executive Team and the Investment Committee, overseeing 100+ investments, across multiple asset classes, in sustainability, conservation, education, economic development, sustainable agriculture, and green real estate.
Previously, Heidi was an Acumen Fund Global Fellow working with D.light Design India, a social enterprise operating in India, China, and Tanzania to eradicate kerosene through the design, manufacturing and distribution of solar-powered LED lights. Before Acumen, Heidi was a Director at Pacific Community Ventures, a hybrid, double bottom-line, community-based investor and nonprofit organization in San Francisco, California focused on small businesses creating high quality jobs in low-income neighborhoods. Previously, she was a founding member of AOL Time Warner Ventures and worked in Investment Banking at Deutsche Morgan Grenfell and Credit Suisse First Boston.
Heidi Patel teaches (and co-created) a course on institutional impact investing at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and she serves on the Investment Committee for the Stanford GSB Student Impact Fund. Heidi is an advisor to Impact America (another women-led impact investing firm) and board member of Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo. Heidi’s work in social enterprise and impact investing has been featured in the Wall St Journal, NPR’s Marketplace, Fox Business News, Forbes.com, Huffington Post, Ladies Home Journal, AOL’s WalletPop, Rick Roberts Show, and the Acumen Fund blog. Heidi earned a AB from Princeton University and an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.
